Drop In For A Bite

Before we ran our Saturday morning errands this past weekend, we headed out to the East Kelowna orchards, bound for Bite Me Organics.  I'd heard owner Robyn King on Radio West earlier in the week and I was keen to purchase some of her peaches for Aunt Lily's Peach Marmalade.  The first photo below isn't Bite Me Organics, but is one of the many orchards found in East Kelowna.







The peach orchard is located at 2934 Dunsmuir Road off East Kelowna Road.  Check their website to see when they're open as they do have set times.  I hadn't heard the entire interview so I showed up on Thursday morning but nobody was there.   I did have a little peek around the yard and was really smitten with the barn and lovely house amid the gorgeous flower gardens and fruit trees.  There's something about east Kelowna that's just so inviting.






















Bite Me Organics is a small family run orchard with four varieties of peaches and five varieties of apples.  Most of the work is done by Robyn, her husband Richard, and their grown children.  With eleven acres of fruit trees grown using organic methods, this sounds like quite a daunting task for a family.  Timing is everything as they say.  The five apple varieties all ripen at different times, though I'm sure it's still a lot of work.  I don't think we give our farmers enough credit (or cash!) for the hard work they do to provide us with the necessities of life.


Robyn has spruced up the barn by displaying paintings by local artists.

Yesterday I received an early Christmas gift in the form of a humbling experience.   As I walked out the door of a downtown card shop, a person walked past dressed in a rather outlandish outfit.    A pair of cut-off lycra shorts were pulled over a pair of shiny taupe tights.    They wore a rainbow wig whose luscious waves tumbled hallway down the back of a red hoodie.   Atop the wig they sported a pair of short white bunny ears.   A blue suede purse rested on one hip and three large but flat Christmas gift bags dangled from the opposite arm.   A bouquet of festive mylar balloons tied with red curling ribbon and covered in Christmas cookies and holiday wishes floated above them.   I followed behind snapping a photo and rationalizing the invasion by the fact you couldn’t see their face.   We met up at the corner and while we waited for some cars to pass I remembered today’s Random Act of Kindness.   “Start-up a friendly chat”. “Are you Santa’s Christmas bunny?”   I asked

My Favourite Childhood Christmas Book

Every Christmas, for as long as I can remember my heart has been touched by  The Wonderful Window by Beth Vardon,  illustrated by Charlot Byj.    I believe it was written in the 50's and I would likely have received it for Christmas sometime in the 60's.  It's no longer in print so I hope I'm not violating any copyright laws by sharing it with you.    As soon as the patchwork was tacked into place The angel came in with a smile on his face. And both he and Katie got down on their knees, Praying: Lord, could you spare one small miracle -- please? That night, all the people who happened to pass  Saw a wonderful window of glistening glass! And the light from the candles was shining inside  On the angel and Katie -- both beaming with pride. (Just take a look now, while the happy choir sings...You'll see -- even Katie --- has almost got wings!)

Pearls of Wisdom

On Tuesday, my daughter received her diploma from the University of British Columbia. On Wednesday I was moving documents to my new computer when I stumbled upon a verse I'd copied from a card my mom gave Nicole when she graduated from high school.  I thought I'd post it today along with some photos of my Mom.  Today, is the fourth anniversary of her passing.
