Happy 99th Reg

On the March 4th weekend, the stars aligned and the offspring of Reginald Young (along with various partners and spouses) gathered together to honour Reg on his 99th Birthday.  Hope you enjoy these cell phone photos from our trip there and back, as well as some from the blessed event.

The Okanagan Youngs rose before the sun to beat the snow storm headed for the Coquihalla.

We  managed to reserve a spot on the Queen of Nanaimo, a non stop trip from Tsawwassen (Vancouver) to Long Harbour (Salt Spring Island) that doesn't run on a regular basis. Our usual route is Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay then switch Ferries to Fulford Harbour, which can take 6 to 8 hours.  This direct trip was an hour and thirty five minutes.

When you're 99 (or in your 100th year...) you get two cakes!

 Salt Spring to Swartz Bay

To make the connecting Ferry that arrives in Swartz Bay to take you to Tsawwassen, you unload from the Salt Spring Ferry, then you have to exit the Ferry terminal, drive up the Pat Bay Highway, take the first exit, cross the highway, get back on said highway and head back in the direction you just came from.  As you re-enter the Ferry Terminal you then stop to purchase your ticket for the next Ferry and cross your fingers that you've made it in time.  Stupidest system ever.  Grateful that the Ferry Fairies were once more on our side.  We were among the first to get off the Salt Spring Ferry and boarded the big boat with less than five minutes to spare.   Even though we were within the last three cars to load, we still managed to make it to the Pacific Buffet and enjoy a great view during breakfast.

Yesterday I received an early Christmas gift in the form of a humbling experience.   As I walked out the door of a downtown card shop, a person walked past dressed in a rather outlandish outfit.    A pair of cut-off lycra shorts were pulled over a pair of shiny taupe tights.    They wore a rainbow wig whose luscious waves tumbled hallway down the back of a red hoodie.   Atop the wig they sported a pair of short white bunny ears.   A blue suede purse rested on one hip and three large but flat Christmas gift bags dangled from the opposite arm.   A bouquet of festive mylar balloons tied with red curling ribbon and covered in Christmas cookies and holiday wishes floated above them.   I followed behind snapping a photo and rationalizing the invasion by the fact you couldn’t see their face.   We met up at the corner and while we waited for some cars to pass I remembered today’s Random Act of Kindness.   “Start-up a friendly chat”. “Are you Santa’s Christmas bunny?”   I asked

My Favourite Childhood Christmas Book

Every Christmas, for as long as I can remember my heart has been touched by  The Wonderful Window by Beth Vardon,  illustrated by Charlot Byj.    I believe it was written in the 50's and I would likely have received it for Christmas sometime in the 60's.  It's no longer in print so I hope I'm not violating any copyright laws by sharing it with you.    As soon as the patchwork was tacked into place The angel came in with a smile on his face. And both he and Katie got down on their knees, Praying: Lord, could you spare one small miracle -- please? That night, all the people who happened to pass  Saw a wonderful window of glistening glass! And the light from the candles was shining inside  On the angel and Katie -- both beaming with pride. (Just take a look now, while the happy choir sings...You'll see -- even Katie --- has almost got wings!)

On Tuesday, my daughter received her diploma from the University of British Columbia. On Wednesday I was moving documents to my new computer when I stumbled upon a verse I'd copied from a card my mom gave Nicole when she graduated from high school.  I thought I'd post it today along with some photos of my Mom.  Today, is the fourth anniversary of her passing.
